A 1,200-year-old hot spring town, one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls and a sea cave with a skylight — Izu's mountains and sea in one day.
In the morning, stroll Shuzenji Onsen, known as the "Little Kyoto of Izu": visit the ancient Shuzenji Temple, soak your feet at Tokko-no-yu and walk the bamboo forest path. At midday, see Joren Falls, Izu's most famous waterfall, and try local wasabi ice cream. In the afternoon, head to Dogashima on the west coast and take a sightseeing boat into Tensodo Cave, where sunlight pours through an opening in the roof onto emerald water.
Shuzenji Temple is free to visit (treasure hall about ¥300) and the Tokko-no-yu foot bath is free; the Dogashima boat costs about ¥1,200–1,500 per adult, is not included, and may not run in rough seas. The drive back takes about 3 hours and traffic can be heavy on weekends and holidays, so the arrival time depends on the day's traffic.
